You can help Recovering Evangelical make a $2,000 donation to Teach for America — an organization devoted to closing the achievement gap in American education — while helping put us on the map with GOOD Magazine and Pepsi Refresh Everything.
Danny Bocanegra, the founder and CEO of SelflessTee, has reached out to Recovering Evangelical on behalf of GOOD Magazine and the Pepsi Refresh Everything project. He’s presented our community with a great challenge — not to mention an exceptional opportunity — to do GOOD (literally), both to help under-served students living in our nation’s capitol and repair the broken image of Christianity.
Danny has asked Recovering Evangelical to join SelflessTee in participating in an 8-hour social media competition by contributing a 15-second video that completes the following sentence: “Our selfless act is ____________ .” Here’s how we decided to fill in that blank:
At Recovering Evangelical we believe that “Christian Values” go way beyond fighting the culture wars over hot-button issues; they include things like closing the achievement gap in American education. Our selfless act is to help Teach for America help underserved students here in our nation’s capitol buy the books and supplies their schools otherwise can’t afford.
As you’ll soon discover, our 15 second clip is included on a mash-up video sponsored by SelflessTee featuring two other organizations who have also submitted 15 second clips (see video below) SelflessTee’s common mash-up video will be competing with several other videos today to see who can get the most views.
GOOD Magazine & Pepsi Refresh Everything will make a sizable donation to whichever video gets the most views TODAY from 11 AM to 7 PM EST. That’s right, the clock is ticking, so jump on this right now!
If SelflessTee’s video wins, Danny Bocanegra will, in turn, award this cash-prize to whichever organization — of the three featured on the SelflessTee video — directs the most views to this video, totaling around $2000.
Bottom line: If Recovering Evangelical directs the most views to SelflessTee’s video (i.e. OUR video), as measured by the number of votes we secure (tip: cast your vote by writing “RECOVERING EVANGELICAL” in the comments section of this post) — AND this video gets the most views overall in today’s contest — we will be awarded the cash prize. We will donate this money to three Teach For America classrooms in Washington, D.C. It’s that simple.
You can help Recovering Evangelical win this competition in three easy steps:
1) WATCH THE VIDEO BELOW
Make sure to watch the entire video from beginning to end, and look for a special message from Recovering Evangelical Founder & CEO, Chris LaTondresse!
2) VOTE FOR RECOVERING EVANGELICAL
Now that you’ve watched the video, vote for Recovering Evangelical by writing “RECOVERING EVANGELICAL” in the comments field at the bottom of this page (or on the YouTube page). This step is CRITICAL, because even if our video gets the most views, without the most votes Recovering Evangelical will not win the competition — and will not be able to use the cash prize to help three Teach for America classrooms in Washington, D.C.
3) SPREAD THE WORD
“Share” this blog post on Facebook and/or Tweet about this opportunity NOW using the social media buttons provided at the top of this post. The more views this video gets and the more of your friends you tell to vote for “Recovering Evangelical”, the more likely we will be able to help Teach for America.
REMEMBER: THIS CONTEST ENDS TODAT AT 7 PM EST. All video views and votes have to take place before this time. So act quickly, and encourage your friends to do the same!
WHY WE CHOSE TEACH FOR AMERICA FOR OUR SELFLESS ACT
At Recovering Evangelical, we believe the values of Jesus and the vision of God’s kingdom go way beyond fighting culture wars over hot-button issues; they include things like overcoming poverty, promoting social mobility, faithful stewardship of God’s creation and helping reconcile the world’s bitter divisions.
With these values in mind and heart, one specific issue the team at Recovering Evangelical cares deeply about is closing the achievement gap in American education. As Josh Dickson, one of our co-founders, explained in a recent blog post, we count education inequality among the Civil Rights issues of our time.
Consider the following, from the Teach for America website:
“By the time they reach fourth grade, children living in low-income communities are already two to three grades behind their higher-income peers. Just half of students in low-income communities will graduate high school by age 18. Those who do graduate will perform on average at an eighth-grade level. Overall, only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college.”
Recovering Evangelical’s selfless act is to help three Teach for America teachers in the Washington D.C. area better serve their students by providing their classrooms with additional money to buy the books and supplies their schools otherwise can’t afford.
You can personally help these students and teachers –- and also play a role in helping Recovering Evangelical change the image of Christianity in America — by simply watching this short video, voting for “Recovering Evangelical” in the comments section, and spreading the word about this contest in your social media channels.
Our time is short but your impact can be timeless. Please join us (and help spread the word)!
